STLPA in the Community
Hello STLPA members and Business Partners!
It was with great intentions that the Community & Social Affairs Committee set out earlier this year with hopes to support a different charity each month but so far that hasn’t happened. We haven’t taken the time to get it all put together and we are now into September so we are going to take a different approach to what we are doing.
We have decided that we are going to choose one charity that we are going to support for the next year and that charity is Magdalene St. Louis. Magdalene St. Louis is a program that helps women heal and rebuild their lives through three essential components of their program: 1) Free long-term housing, 2) Comprehensive physical and mental healthcare, and 3) Job readiness.
Women can stay in the Magdalene residential community for up to two years. They live together, recover together, and provide sisterhood and support for one another. Magdalene residents are connected with physical and mental healthcare providers at no cost to them. They also receive support from partnering organizations through case management, trauma therapy and addiction recovery. Through their social enterprise, Bravely, women receive training in business skills and are employed at a living wage. Upon graduation from Magdalene, they will have accumulated savings and transferable job skills which will empower them to support themselves for life.
Upon admission to Magdalene, each resident who begins the program is given a Welcome Home Basket. The residents likely will be coming without many of her own belongings, so while these items are very simple, they are also very meaningful. This basket allows here to begin her path of healing.
Each basket consists of the following:
- Laundry hamper or storage bin (this is the “basket” that all the below items can go in)
- New sheets for a twin bed
- Bath robe
- New towel set
- Full-sized lotion
- Full-sized deodorant
- Full-sized toothbrush
- Full-sized toothpaste
- Full-sized shampoo and conditioner
- Full-sized body wash or soap
- Full-sized shaving cream
- Notebook or Notepad
- Personal Note
- Inspirational book
- Handmade shawl, blanket, etc.
We have broken down the items and will be collecting items in September, October, November, January, February, March, April, June, July and August. We will have everything ready to donate in September of 2018.
The donations we are asking for is as follows:
September: Laundry hamper or storage bin
October: Throw blanket and inspirational books
November: Hats, gloves, socks
January: Planner, notebook and pens,
February: Full-size deodorant, toothbrush, toothpaste
March: Full-sized lotion, razors and shaving cream.
April: Chapstick, full-size shampoo and condition
June: Bathrobe, chapstick and notebooks
July: New towel set, deodorant, toothbrush and toothpaste
August: Watch and full-size body wash or soap
Some items are repeated but they are items that are needed more often than others. Also, this is just a guide. Any of the above items can be donated at any time.
We would love to be able to give Magdalene St. Louis multiple Welcome Home baskets and we are looking forward to seeing how generous STLPA can be to these women in need.
Thank you for your amazing support!
